can only help the romney campaign and only hurt the obama campaign. last debate between romney and obama, romney cleaned obama's clock. you can tell who won by the poll numbers. having ryan do well in this debate only helps that momentum going forward. at the same time, vice president biden is prone to gaffes. he has talked about the middle-class being in a ditch for the last four years. he has been talking about raising taxes, raising trillions of dollars in taxes. having that one soundbite that biden can across with as a gaffe could really hurt. >> heather: do you think we'll see a more aggressive vice president biden? >> i hope so. one thing about the first debate that democrats will learn that mitt romney and paul ryan, they fact checkers they will get into it. they will say things over and over again that are not true. during the debate the vice president needs to say during the debate, paul ryan that is not true. at the time they can't rely on fact checks for after the debate. >> heather: vice president biden has had problems were with his own fact checkingers. coming out

and big money raised by mitt romney since the debate. his debate performance clearly caught the attention of both republicans, who were worried about the trajectory of his campaign and new voters and the campaign is reporting since the debate performance they've raked in more than $12 million, and, just today, the romney campaign undertaking a national teleconference, and phone banking exercise, made another 2 million contacts with what they hope to be new republican voters. it is a $12 million boost into the debate for mitt romney and stands in the face of staggering numbers from the barack obama campaign reporting last month they collected over $181 million. that does not rival what obama did four years ago in october, before the 2008 presidential election, but is still a massive amount of money, last night, talking to the romney campaign and the big fund-raising dollars the obama campaign was putting up, romney staffers smiled as if to suggest they might top it. >> arthel: and also a statement, romney pushing his tax policy, this weekend, right? >> reporter: of course in the wake of th

romney, the republican nominee. this debate and the next three, two presidential, one vice-presidential, are sponsored by the commission on presidential debates. tonight's 90 minutes will be about domestic issues and will follow a format designed by the commission. there will be six, roughly 15-minute segments, with two-minute answers for the first question, then open discussion for the remainder of each segment. thousands of people offered suggestions on segment subjects or questions via the internet and other means. but i made the final selections. for the record, they were not submitted for approval to the commission per the candidates. the subjects, as i announce in advance, will be three on the economy, and one each on health care, the role of government, and government, with an emphasis throughout on differences, specifics, and choices. both candidates will also have two-minute closing statements. the audience here in the hall has promised to remain silent. no cheers, applause, boos, hisses, among other noisy distracting things, 0 -- so we may all concentrate on what

's lead. the real mitt romney. there's been a lot of talk about last night's debate. who won, who lost. but the real debate last night was between mitt romney and mitt romney. and being so contradictory, mr. romney opened a huge line of attack for the president. not just for 90 minutes, but for the 33 days until this election. and today in a blistering speech, the president took full advantage of the opportunity that romney's dishonest performance invited. >> when i got on to the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. but it couldn't have been mitt romney. because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy, the fellow on stage last night said he didn't know anything about that. the real mitt romney said we don't need any more teachers in our classrooms. but don't boo, vote. but the fellow on stage last night, he loves teachers. can't get enough of them. the mitt romney we all know invested in companies that were called pioneers of outsourcing jobs to other countries.

saying romney won the debate, but it was no game changer. and jared bernstein, msnbc contributor and former chief economist for vice president joe biden. bb, let me start with you. what are your thoughts? >> first of all, romney won a victory that was a victory of performance art built on a whole set of lies. i think people have counted up to 28 to 30 lies. and i actually think the president deserves some credit for at a couple of critical points holding romney accountable. it's a big victory to get romney to own voucher care as a replacement for medicare and the president also took romney on when he said no one over 65 will be affected because of the rebeautiful obamacare in fact as the president pointed out, seniorses will pay $600 more for prescription drugs and the medicare trust if you said will expire eight years sooner. secondly the president talked straight to 50 and 55-year-olds and said do you really want to replace medded care with voucher care? romney is now lashed to the idea. >> he definitely did. jared, let me go into the facts about the $5 trillion tax plan that r
